Feijoa facts

It is a common belief that Feijoas around the world are the size of an egg. Although this is true for a large proportion of the cultivars grown it is not true for feijoas grown in New Zealand.

New Zealand is the world leader for commercially growing of feijoas. Feijoas grown and sold through us “feijoanz” sizing starts at:

Small 45 to 65 grams (which is about the same size as a large egg)

Medium 65 to to 90 grams (up to double the size of an egg)

Large 90 to 120 grams

X Large 120 grams + (these can be up to over 200 grams but are typically up to 160 grams)

So as you can see a feijoa grown to the size of an egg is not what we do. You will find our feijoas sweeter and juicier than most in the market (size does not adversely affect taste in fact they taste better)

Below are some basic facts on feijoas  


The Feijoa (Feijoa sellowiana, synonym Acca sellowiana), also known as Pineapple Guava or Guavasteen, is an evergreen shrub or small tree, 1–7 meters (3–23 ft) in height, originating from the highlands of southern Brazil, parts of Colombia, Uruguay and northern Argentina.


The fruit matures in autumn and is green, ellipsoid-shaped and the size of a chicken egg. It has a sweet, aromatic flavor. The flesh is juicy and is divided into a clear jelly-like seed pulp and a firmer, slightly gritty opaque flesh nearer the skin. The fruit drops when ripe, but can be picked from the tree prior to the drop to prevent bruising. The genus also called feijoa, is monotypic. Like the closely-related guava, the fruit pulp has a gritty texture which is utilized in some natural cosmetic products as an exfoliant. Feijoa fruit have a distinctive smell. The ester methyl benzoate smells strongly of feijoas and the aroma of the fruit is caused mostly by this and other closely related esters.   


1 Introduction

Although we do not make the claim that feijoas will heal you here are some exerts of research that has been carried out around the world.

We would like to encourage any and all research and development into the health property’s of feijoas worldwide, given that New Zealand is the leading grower of Feijoas in the world we would be happy to assist with this research were possible.

Feijoa sellowiana Berg. (syn. Acca sellowiana) is an evergreen bushy shrub member of Myrtaceae family, native to extreme southern Brazil, northern Argentina, western Paraguay and Uruguay. Different biological activities of F. sellowiana fruits have been reported: antioxidant; antibacterial; cytotoxic; anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer activities on solid and haematological cancer cells.

In particular, previously studied the antibacterial activity of leaf, stem and different parts of fruit (skin, pulp and seeds), demonstrating the highest activity of the fruit (Basile et al., 1997). Successively, showed a high antioxidant activity of an extract from fruits that inhibited CL emission from human Whole Blood (WB) phagocytes and isolated Polymorphonuclear Leukocytes (PMA), that were or were not activated with soluble or phagocytic stimuli (Basile et al., 1997; Vuotto et al., 2000). In addition, the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activity of an acetonic extract from F. sellowiana fruits on the nitric oxide (NO) pathway, which plays an important role in inflammation, was demonstrated (Rossi et al., 2007). Finally, Feijoa acetonic extract was showed to exert anti-cancer activities on solid and haematological cancer cells. Feijoa extract did not show toxic effects on normal myeloid progenitors, thus displaying a tumour-selective activity. In the Feijoa acetonic extract, fractionation and subsequent purification and analyses identified flavone as the active component. Flavone induces apoptosis which is accompanied by caspase activation and p16, p21 and TRAIL overexpression in human myeloid leukaemia cells (Bontempo et al., 2007).
